“Could turn out to be a very clever bit of business” – Sheffield Wednesday eye Newcastle transfer: The verdict

This article is part of Football League World’s ‘The Verdict’ series, which provides personal opinions from the FLW writers regarding the latest breaking news, teams, players, managers, potential signings and more…

Sheffield Wednesday are one of the clubs that have shown an interest in Newcastle United‘s Elliot Anderson, according to inews.

A loan move to the Owls is said to have fallen through previously and now they’re alongside Championship clubs such as Millwall, Middlesbrough, Sheffield United, and West Bromwich Albion in holding an interest on the back of his form at Bristol Rovers.

But would he be a good signing for the Owls? And would a deal hinge on promotion?

We quizzed our FLW writers for their thoughts…

Alfie Burns

Elliot Anderson has been superb since joining Bristol Rovers and there’s not really any denying at this stage that he’s more than good enough to play a higher level than League Two.

That being said, I don’t think that Sheffield Wednesday’s chances of signing Anderson will be dependent on promotion into the Championship.

He’d be a great signing for them and if they can pitch themselves to Newcastle in a manner that convinces them he can develop at Hillsborough, they will be in with a shot of signing him.

League One is still a division that will help develop Anderson further, even if his current quality does suggest he should be playing in the Championship.

So, you’d think that if Sheffield Wednesday can get their pitch right, it wouldn’t matter which division they are playing in next season. They can still offer Anderson an exciting project, which gives them a chance.

This could turn out to be a very clever bit of business by the Owls if they are able to secure the services of Anderson
