“Could make a good low-cost option” – West Brom enter transfer race for Chelsea player: The verdict

This article is part of Football League World’s ‘The Verdict‘ series, which provides personal opinions from the FLW writers regarding the latest breaking news, teams, players, managers, potential signings and more…

Championship outfit West Bromwich Albion have joined the race to recruit Chelsea shot-stopper Nathan Baxter in the summer, as per a report from TEAMtalk.

The 23-year-old currently plies his trade at fellow second-tier side Hull City on a season-long loan deal from the Blues – and has impressed during his time at the MKM Stadium thus far.

His introduction into the starting lineup in November coincided with an upturn in form and four consecutive clean sheets – a period of games that have proved to be crucial in dragging the Tigers to safety in their first season back in the second tier.

With Sam Johnstone looking set to depart The Hawthorns in the summer, Baxter is likely to be competing with Alex Palmer and David Button for a starting spot if he does arrive in the West Midlands, though they aren’t alone in their pursuit of the goalkeeper.

Hull are also thought to be interested in luring him away from Stamford Bridge permanently and with the backing of new owner Acun Ilicali, they may be able to turn this wish into a reality.

Looking at this potential deal from Albion’s perspective though, we asked three of our writers at Football League World whether he would be a good and much-needed addition for Steve Bruce and the Baggies.

With Sam Johnstone seemingly destined to be on his way out of the club at the end of this season, the Baggies are certainly going to need another option between the posts for next season.
