Coronation Street star Peter Ash flooded with messages as he marks huge milestone in live TV surprise

Former Coronation Street star Peter Ash has been flooded with messages after he was forced to reveal he was celebrating a milestone during a live TV appearance.

As fans of the ITV soap know, the actor played Paul Foreman on the cobbles for six years. He bowed out of the long-running show in September, with his beloved character's heartbreaking death coming 17 months after he was diagnosed with Motor Neurone Disease.

The hard-hitting storyline saw Corrie work with the help of the MND Association to portray the deterioration of Paul as well as the effect the disease had on his family and friends, including husband Billy Mayhew, mother Bernie Winter, sister Gemma Winter and Summer Spellman.

Since his exit from the cobbles, Peter has been seen starring in panto in Oldham and will soon be back on stage in Peter James' stage adaptation of Picture You Dead.

On Tuesday (February 4), Peter appeared on Good Morning Britain to chat about his role alongside former Strictly Come Dancing winner Ore Oduba who will be joining the play's cast in May when Peter departs.

But knowing it was his special day, hosts Susanna Reid and Ed Balls asked him if it was a special birthday to which he confirmed it was his 40th. They then enlisted the help on entertainment editor Richard Arnold who carried out a chocolate cake with burning '40' candles in the top.

Taking to Instagram following his interview, Peter shared a picture of himself with his cake as he beamed for the camera alongside Ore, Susanna and Ed and said: "What a lovely way to start my 40th birthday! Thank you, @gmb for the cake! #HappyBirthdayToMe #40thBirthday."

And the birthday wishes quickly came flooding in. @joannarussell1965 said: "Happy birthday & many blessings for you Peter!"
