Coronation Street star Liam McCheyne has admitted to being 'naive' about knife crime before taking on the hard-hitting topic as part of his latest storyline.
There were horrifying and heartbreaking scenes in the ITV soap earlier this week as Mason Radcliffe became the victim of a knife attack at the hands of his own brothers after a terrified Dylan Wilson pulled a knife during an unprovoked attack.
Mason's time in Weatherfield came to a dramatic end after he helped DS Lisa Swain with her continued enquiry into her late partner Becky's death as she believed his siblings were responsible for her dying in the line of duty.
After helping to get them arrested and questioned, Mason decided his time on the cobbles was up and he accepted a job offer from Stu Carpenter in Germany. But Matty and Logan attacked Mason and Dylan as Mason tried to retrieve some family photos from their flat to take with him to.
While they weren't carrying a knife, a terrified Dylan, played by Liam, tried to protect his pal, only for his decision to end in Mason's horrifying death.
It wasn't until later that Dylan finally admitted to his dad Sean Tully after he questioned his son's nervous demeanour in the aftermath of the stabbing. The teen admitted that the knife that was used to kill Mason belonged to him and he'd brought it to the scene of the crime, with Sean handing his son into the police.
Speaking about how he prepared for the storyline, Liam said: "I would say I went into this storyline quite naive to knife crime so working alongside a charity was really important and we worked closely with The Ben Kinsella Trust. We had calls with them which were invaluable and hearing their facts, figures and real-life stories helped shape the storyline.
