Cordon put in place around Greater Manchester park after man stabbed

A police cordon was put in place around a park in Bury this morning after a man was stabbed.

Whitehead Park, which sits off Ainsworth Road and Newbold Street, was fully taped off. Pictures from Monday morning show at least one police car at the scene with tape in place in the park.

All entrances into the area were taped off with members of the public unable to enter. It comes after a 19-year-old man was stabbed, GMP have confirmed this afternoon.

A GMP spokesman said: "Police were called to reports of a man being stabbed in Whitehead Park on Ainsworth Road in Bury, at approximately 8.30pm last night, Sunday 12 February 2023.

"A 19-year-old man was found to have sustained a stabbing injury to the left side of his chest. His injuries are not thought to be life threatening or life changing. He is in hospital receiving treatment.

"It is believed he was approached by three males in the park, who he did not know, and a physical altercation ensued. Officers have sealed off part of Whitehead Park and the scene will remain in place whilst investigations continue."

Sergeant John Nestor of Bury CID said: “This was a targeted attack that has left a young man with a serious stabbing injury.

“We are certain that this is an isolated, targeted attack and that the wider community are not at risk. However, there will be an increased police presence over the next few days, to provide that reassurance.

“The investigation is still very much in the early stages and we are appealing for anyone who witnessed the incident last night or anyone who has any information or CCTV/dashcam/doorbell footage, to contact GMP on 0161 856 8078 or via 101,
