Confirmed: Chelsea secure transfer agreement with EFL club

Mason Burstow has signed for Chelsea and will be loaned back to Charlton Athletic for the remainder of the season, as announced by the club this afternoon.

The 18-year-old, who has scored six goals in seven starts in all competitions this season, leaves the Addicks after just two senior league starts for the club.

Burstow was left out of the Addicks squad that won 2-1 at Portsmouth on Monday evening after the club accepted a bid from the Blues late on Deadline Day.

Owner Thomas Sandgaard explained the course of events when he spoke to the club’s website after the sale was confirmed.

He said: “We’ve had a lot of interest in Mason but we only were going to let him go if it was an excellent deal for the club.

“Chelsea have matched our valuation and, as part of the deal, he will come back to us on loan which was important for us.”

With Jayden Stockley’s current injury, Josh Davison’s loan departure and Jonathan Leko’s inconsistent form, the loan back seems necessary from a squad depth point of view.

Any transfer fee or speculation thereof remains undisclosed with the scenario clearly testing the ambition of Thomas Sandgaard at Charlton.

At 18 with such limited experience, it is likely that Burstow is a long way off of any first team involvement, and it will be interesting to see what the development path is for him after this season.

Whether the 18-year-old will feature in Premier League 2 for the Blues’ U23 side in 2022/23 or go out on loan elsewhere.
