Conference League set for Scottish football as Premiership clubs paying six figure premium for new division

A new Conference League that would sit just below League Two is set to be voted in at an Scottish FA members meeting.

The new division would come in above the Lowland and Highland leagues as tier five and is likely to house six clubs from those two leagues alongside four Premiership 'B' teams- Celtic, Rangers, Aberdeen and Hearts. All SPFL clubs are aware of the proposals and will vote on it at the SFA's AGM, according to the Daily Mail.

51 per cent of the vote required to pass and it is claimed that there is support from members for the proposals. The plans have been put together by the Pyramid Working Group. Conference football in Scotland will arrive from the 2024-25 season, even though there are some calls from some League Two clubs for it to come as early as next season. It will be a separate entity to the SPFL.

That means it will also be free to explore to its own commercial rights and Premiership clubs are paying £100,000 each to be involved. Celtic, Rangers and Hearts 'B' teams have all competed in the Lowland League this term.
