Comparing Ivan Perisic’s 2021-22 stats to Tottenham’s wing-backs

After deciding to stay at Tottenham, Antonio Conte now looks set to make Ivan Perisic his first signing of the summer.

Conte, who has reportedly told Spurs to aim to sign at least six or seven first-team players, previously worked with Perisic at Inter Milan.

The manager initially deemed Perisic surplus to requirements and sent him on loan to Bayern Munich, where he won the Bundesliga, Champions League and DFB-Pokal in 2019-20.

He was then brought back into the Inter squad by Conte, who deployed him at left wing-back. The Croatia international made 42 appearances in all competitions and helped them win the Serie A title in 2020-21.

“We sent Perisic to Bayern because he was not prepared to do the defending work I had asked for. He returned with a different mentality,” Conte said in May 2021.

“I asked him the same things as last season, but he showed that he has extraordinary characteristics and needs to believe in himself more. The moment he started doing that, he started to play. He can be even more decisive.”

The 33-year-old has recently rejected Inter’s offer of a contract extension and was linked with a move to Chelsea but is now set to join Tottenham on a free transfer.

We’ve compared his stats from the 2021-22 Serie A season with the corresponding Premier League output of Matt Doherty, Emerson Royal, Sergio Reguilon and Ryan Sessegnon.
