Commonwealth Games guide: Warner battles to silver, and who to watch this weekend

Canadians won two golds and a silver in judo, while former Olympic champion Damian Warner battled to a silver in the decathlon as Canada racked up eight more medals today at the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, Scotland.

Warner took a slim lead into day 2 of his event but once again could not hold on. After winning the 110-metre hurdles stage to start the day, the 36-year-old placed ninth in the discus and seventh in the pole vault, knocking him out of the top spot. Warner bounced back with a third in the javelin before closing with a sixth in the gruelling 1,500m to finish behind Grenada's Lindon Victor, who captured his third consecutive Commonwealth Games title.

The pole vault continues to vex Warner. At the 2018 Commonwealth Games, the defending champ was leading when he failed to clear the bar on his first three attempts, resulting in a zero score that knocked him out of the competition. The same thing happened at the 2024 Olympics in Paris, where Warner was in second place until fouling out. This time, he at least put some points on the board by clearing his first three heights, but he failed at a modest 4.50 metres —  including one attempt where he easily cleared the bar, only for his pole to knock it off.

"I'm quite frustrated," Warner said after the morning session. ""But you just gotta keep fighting to the end." And he did.
