Commonwealth Games guide: Mitton strikes gold, and who to watch Thursday

Shot-put star Sarah Mitton captured her second straight Commonwealth Games title to headline Canada's relatively slight four medals on Day 6 in Glasgow.

Mitton, a two-time indoor world champion and a silver medallist at the 2023 outdoor worlds, sent her best throw 19.88 metres to win by more than two metres. The Brooklyn, N.S. native's victory gave Canada its third gold medal in track and field at these Games, following a hammer-throw sweep by reigning Olympic and world champions Ethan Katzberg and Camryn Rogers.

A pair of Canadian weightlifters reached the podium today as Alex Bellemarre and Rose Beaudoin took silver and bronze, respectively, and Canada's world-champion men's 3x3 wheelchair basketball team rebounded from a semifinal loss to England to beat host Scotland 19-9 in their bronze game.

Also, two Canadian boxers clinched a medal (colour TBD) as Amber-Jane Wall and Joshua Ofori advanced to Friday's semifinals. The winners of each semi square off for gold while the losers are both automatically awarded a bronze.

However, there were a few disappointments on a day where Canada's medal haul fell well short of the 13 it averaged on Monday and Tuesday.
