Colchester United in transfer tussle with Barrow for 28-year-old

Barrow and Colchester are both turning to the National League in their pursuit of signings, with both EFL sides eager to try and sign Max Kretzschmar as reported by Sky Sports (26th June, 19:39).

Both sides spent the majority of their last League Two campaign firmly rooted in the bottom half of the table and the former of the two also only narrowly missed out on the drop.

It leaves both fourth tier outfits needing to make improvements to their playing squad this summer to avoid a similar fate in the next campaign. Barrow and Colchester though do not have limitless budgets and will have to work within their means during this transfer window.

That has seen them both turn to Max Kretzschmar, who currently plays for Woking in the National League.

Despite spending the last four years with his current club – and performing well along the way – the 28-year-old will leave the side this summer upon the expiry of his current deal. That leaves him available for absolutely nothing and the two League Two sides are ready to swoop in.

Last season he produced some of his best numbers in front of goal too, with 13 in total in the league in just 34 games. Having also had fourth tier experience early on in his career with Wycombe, it could be time for a return to the EFL and to that division – and Barrow and Colchester are now both poised to offer him the chance to do so during this summer transfer window.

The Verdict

Max Kretzschmar has seemingly proven his worth now in the National League and for Woking and the next logical step is a return to the EFL to see if he can cut it there again.
