Cody Gakpo reveals how close he came to Manchester United transfer following Erik ten Hag talks

Cody Gakpo claims he was 'close' to joining Manchester United in the summer transfer window after he held talks with manager Erik ten Hag about a potential move. United prioritised the addition of a new forward over the summer before eventually opting for Ajax ace Antony rather than the PSV Eindhoven man.

Gakpo, 23, also received rival interest from Premier League clubs Leeds and Southampton before deadline day but chose to remain at PSV, a decision that already looks to be paying off.

The Dutch forward has grabbed 13 goals and notched 11 assists from just 18 appearances so far this season and could be one of the breakout stars at the World Cup when it begins next month.

A strong showing at the major international tournament would see his stock rise even further, and Gakpo admits he hasn't given up hope of a move to English football yet.

"I was close to leaving, I spoke to Erik ten Hag a few times at Manchester United," he told The Times. "In the end the deal didn’t go through, which was a shame, for me and my development, and because Manchester United is one of the biggest clubs in the world, but also for PSV, because to transfer a player to Manchester United is a good thing for the club.

"It ended about a week before the end of the transfer window and in that week I had to decide if I would go to Leeds or Southampton. In the end I stayed, but it was a stressful period.’ "I always said if I stay here, it’s my childhood club.
