Clyde's decision making must improve, says boss Brian McLean after Spartans frustrate side in League Two opener

Brian McLean admits Clyde’s decision making has to improve if they are to be a force in League Two this season.

The new Bully Wee boss started life in the fourth tier with a 1-1 draw away to SPFL newcomers Spartans on Saturday, after the Lowland League champions came back from Martin Rennie’s first-half opener to take a point through Jamie Dishington’s 69th minute effort.

Clyde got caught in possession inside their own half, which allowed Dishington to cut inside and fire in the equaliser, and McLean said although there were pleasing aspects from their overall display, his side need to be more commanding.

He said: “We allowed Spartans to gradually wear us down and become a bit more effective as the second half went on. We allowed crosses to come into the box, we didn’t stop the ball at source and that puts an onus on the decision making being right.

“There was a bit of uncertainty at times and we weren’t decisive with our decision making, we weren’t commanding enough and the way we concede the goal is extremely poor.

“There is a lesson to be learned from that and it is important that we take our medicine.”

He added: “I thought in the first half we were excellent. We were on the same wavelength, we looked a threat going forward and we exposed them in the wider areas.

“We knew there would be a reaction with a change in the conditions and the mind going in the other direction.

“We knew we would have to be adaptable to that and it took us a lot longer to do that, so that was a disappointing aspect.

“Ultimately, it is a point on the road on the first game of the season with a new group so we’ll take it, reevaluate, galvanise and get going again as soon as possible.
