Club to ‘make another attempt’ to sign ‘very expensive’ Tottenham star

According to reports, Dutch giants Ajax “will make another attempt” to sign Steven Bergwijn from Tottenham Hotspur during the summer transfer window.

The 24-year-old signed for Spurs in 2020 from PSV. They paid around £26m to bring him to the Premier League.

Arsenal and Spurs are actually consistently over-achieving

Bergwijn has been in and out of the team since his move to Tottenham. He scored his third league goal of the season as Antonio Conte’s side beat Newcastle 5-1 on Sunday.

The winger attracted interest from Ajax in January but they could not agree on a fee with Tottenham.

Dutch journalist Mike Verweij believes Ajax will attempt to sign Bergwijn this summer:

“I think he is still very expensive for Ajax, even with his salary,” the De Telegraaf reporter said (via Sport Witness).

“That will be very difficult. I do think Ajax will make another attempt.”

Elsewhere, Paul Merson has claimed that Tottenham Hotspur are now “favourites” to finish in the top four even with them being a “one-man team”.

“You watch Tottenham completely and utterly dismantling Newcastle on Sunday. Newcastle aren’t the worst team in the world. I watched them at Chelsea a few weeks ago, and bar genius from Kai Havertz and Jorginho, the Blues didn’t really look like scoring that day – then Tottenham go and put five past them.
