Cleary set for full-time Cork role as Ricken steps down as manager

John Cleary will take over as manager of the Cork senior footballers on a full-time basis after it was confirmed that Keith Ricken has stood down from the role due to health reasons.

Appointed to the role last October, Ricken missed the conclusion of the side's Allianz Football League campaign due to illness, with Cleary stepping into the breach.

The vastly experienced Castlehaven man was in charge for the championship outings against Kerry, Louth, Limerick and Dublin.

The two-time All-Ireland winner has made no secret of his interest in the position previously, and his coaching CV includes a successful reign in charge of the Cork minor ladies, All-Ireland Under-21 success in 2009 as well as success with his own club.

Cork County Board chairperson Marc Sheehan paid tribute to the outgoing Ricken.

"The county owes Keith a considerable debt for his selfless contribution, despite his off-field challenges," he said.

"Given his record in MTU and at club level, we have no doubt that he will continue to make a sizeable contribution to Gaelic Games in the county. His reputation as a leader of young men will be further enhanced from his time here."

Ricken was appointed manager after an impressive stint in charge of the county's Under-20 side, culminating in an All-Ireland title in his first year in charge, and a subsequent Munster title.

At the monthly County Committee meeting for August on Tuesday week, 2 August, the County Executive will propose Cleary for ratification on a three-year term, with selectors will be named in due course.
