Claressa Shields posts touching tweet as new Savannah Marshall fight date tabled

Claressa Shields has shared her thoughts on the newly proposed fight date for her clash against Savannah Marshall. 

Shields was scheduled to face Marshall at the O2 on Saturday, September 10th, but the blockbuster bout was postponed after the death of Queen Elizabeth II. 

The event, hosted by BOXXER, was billed as the ‘most anticipated’ women’s fight of all time, with the winner set to become the first undisputed middleweight champion of the four-belt era.  

Elsewhere, the rest of the card was due to feature an all-female line-up for the first time in UK professional boxing history. 

However, BOXXER chief executive Ben Shalom confirmed that the British Boxing Board of Control had decided to postpone the show as a mark of respect.

“This is an unprecedented moment in our history and our sincere thoughts are primarily with the Royal Family and the nation at this time,” said Shalom. 

“A provisional date for Saturday, 15th October at The O2 is being worked on by all parties to stage this unique and historical night of celebration for women’s sport at a more appropriate time.

“Further updates on the new date will be made at the earliest opportunity.”

A fight between Shields and Marshall has been long anticipated, with Marshall the only competitor to ever defeat Shields at amateur level. 

Shields was livid when Marshall pulled out of their scheduled meeting in July –– accusing the English fighter of playing “mind games” to buy “extra time.” 

Yet, the American was considerate in her response to this latest re-scheduling and tweeted that she understood the decision.
