Christian Eriksen could play key role in new-look Manchester United midfield

It is perhaps too soon to get carried away by Manchester United's recent revival when so many reoccurring concerns remain present in their side.

United are unbeaten across their last seven matches in all competitions and have won their last five. Yet, you only have to watch them to know that things aren't quite as convincing as they seem.

They threw away two-goal leads against both Newport County and Wolves, while they had 22 shots against them in victory over West Ham, 23 away at Aston Villa, and another 22 at Luton Town last weekend.

If they carry on playing this way, it seems only a matter of time before they taste defeat again, and it would only take one off-day in attack for the problems to be exposed.

A lack of control has been the biggest issue in recent weeks, and even with so many of their key players now back from injury, there has been a lack of cohesion and identity about the way they play.

United play with a careless abandon that often sees them contest matches at breakneck speed, where play switches from one side to another and both teams have an abundance of opportunities to score.

Take that trip to Luton last weekend. The home side had 72 transition opportunities in the match, the third-highest total for a team in a Premier League match this season.

A key reason for that is United's lack of control in midfield, something epitomised by Casemiro's demise this season. He has been handed eight yellow cards in just his last nine matches, and he was fortunate not to be shown a second one at Kenilworth Road last time out.
