Chris Wood celebrations and Jamie Reuben train banter in Newcastle United moments missed

Newcastle United made it six wins from their last seven games with a 2-1 win at Southampton on Thursday night which all-but ends any lingering fears of Premier League relegation. Summer signings Chris Wood and Bruno Guimaraes were both on target as the Magpies recovered from going a goal down to claim their seventh win of the season.

The victory saw them move up to 14th in the table, a whopping ten points clear of the drop zone. Here are five moments you may have missed from the win at St Mary's.

Newcastle’s new-found team spirit was on show last night as Chris Wood received a hero’s welcome as he walked into the dressing room. The New Zealand international had not bagged in seven appearances since a £25million move from Burnley but he broke his duck with a superb header to level the scoreline against Southampton.

A video posted by the club’s media channel shows Wood being greeted by loud cheers from his teammates after the victory, with Eddie Howe admitting “it meant a lot” to the striker in his post-match interview.

Mehrdad Ghodoussi poked fun at speculation that co-owner Jamie Reuben could be in the frame to join Chelsea. A Bloomberg report named Reuben as a candidate to buy the Blues after the UK Government decided to freeze Roman Abramovich’s assets.

However, those rumours appear to have been quashed by the Newcastle hierarchy after Ghodoussi posted a photo of himself, Reuben and Amanda Staveley on the way to Southampton, captioned: ‘you will never leave me’. This provoked a witty response from Reuben, who edited cans of lager onto their table and Joelinton’s face onto Ghodoussi’s shirt - a mock-up of the attire won by Toon fans on their way to West Ham last month.
