Newcastle United forward Chris Wood continues incredible goalscoring week with New Zealand

Chris Wood has continued his incredible goalscoring week for New Zealand by scoring twice in their 7-1 win over New Caledonia, despite only being brought on as a 71st-minute substitute.

His first goal came on 83 minutes when he used his pace to break into space before sliding the ball underneath Jean-Gilles Hnamuko; he scored again six minutes later when he converted a cross from Andre de Jong.

The Newcastle United striker made New Zealand history on Monday night (March 21) when he bagged a brace in a 4-0 win over Fiji as the All Whites continue on their march towards World Cup qualification.

New Zealand have only ever reached the World Cup Finals twice in their history; their last qualification came in 2010. The 30-year-old's two goals against Fiji meant he also surpassed Vaughan Coveny to become the All Whites' all-time leading goalscorer.

"It means a lot. It's been sought after for a very long time,'' Wood revealed on Monday night. "I dreamed as a kid trying to get to it, so to break it is fantastic and hopefully I can add a few more goals across the course of my career."

Wood has struggled to find the back of the net since making his £25m move from Burnley to St James' Park, with the striker only netting his first Magpies goal earlier this month at the eighth attempt.
