Chris Sutton busts Celtic Champions League myth on mega bucks transfers as Ange shows Hoops are doing it right
Chris Sutton has busted the myth Celtic should be spending beaucoup bucks to make a fist of it in the Champions League.
The Celtic hero and Record Sport columnist insists the criticism thrown at the Parkhead club for not spending enough after garnering a major transfer fee of £25million for popular winger Jota from the cash-rich Saudi Arabia Pro League is way off the mark. The Hoops banked a considerable amount for the Portuguese and went on to spend here and there with the likes of Gustaf Lagerbielke, Luis Palma, Odin Thiago Holm and Maik Nawrocki all arriving in the summer for seven-figure fees.
But in the tough financial waters of the Champions League, the Hoops spending is dwarfed not only by the likes of Feyenoord, Atletico Madrid and Lazio in their group, but across the competition as a whole. Brendan Rodgers' men have lost their first two games to the Dutch champions and the Serie A strugglers, but Sutton insists that doesn't mean the panic button should be pressed with the chequebook coming out.
He's using the example of Ange Postecoglou's shrewd recruitment in Glasgow as the template going forward, and that big-money arrivals would completely upset the balance at Parkhead.
He told Mail Online's It's All Kick off podcast: "At Spurs, Postecoglou will work within the parameters of the club. Like he did at Celtic, at Celtic there's this notion that they should be buying because of the Champions League football, that they should be buying £20-25million players. That can't happen.
"That would upset the whole balance of the club, the wage structure, you would have to pay a player on £25m something like £80,000 to £100,000 (per week). It's the same at Tottenham."
