Chris Eubank Sr calls for boycott on his son’s fight with Conor Benn

Chris Eubank Sr has called for a boycott on his son’s fight with Conor Benn this weekend, believing it is too dangerous for Eubank Jr to be boxing at the agreed upon weight.

With Benn stepping up from welterweight for the first time, it has been agreed that both men must weight in at 157lbs for the scrap at The O2.

Eubank Jr has never fought professionally at less than the 160lb middleweight limit and also won the IBO world title at super-middleweight.

His father is concerned for his son’s safety due to having to cut the extra weight and wants a boycott on the fight as a result.

Former boxer Spencer Fearon read from a statement from Eubank Sr on The Fight is Right podcast, saying: ‘This is what Eubank is saying. This is Eubank’s statement. And it’s a real simple statement.

‘”Dear Spencer and The Fight Is Right: boycott the fight. Livingstone Junior vs Benn. You know what 3lbs beneath the middleweight limit at 33 years old can do. This is how brain injuries occur.”’

This is not the first time the former world champion has aired his concerns. With the tragic death of son Sebastian last year and the experience of his fight with Michael Watson in 1991 causing his opponent significant brain injuries.
