Conor Benn's trainer Tony Sims breaks his silence after his fight with Chris Eubank Jr is called off

Conor Benn‘s trainer Tony Sims has broken his silence after his fight with Chris Eubank Jr was cancelled following a failed drugs test.

Benn, 26, was informed that he had failed a drugs test with VADA (Voluntary Anti-Doping Agency) on September 23, which led the British Boxing Board of Control (BBBoC) to ‘prohibit’ Saturday night’s main event at London’s O2 Arena.

The Daily Mail first reported early on Wednesday afternoon that Benn’s A sample had returned with an adverse finding of banned substance clomifene.

Also known as clomiphene, clomifene is a female fertility drug that can also increase testosterone levels in men.

Benn however has denied any wrongdoing as he insisted he has never knowingly taken any banned substances.

And Sims, who has trained Benn since he turned professional in 2016, has given him his full support.

In a statement he said: “After 26 years in boxing, a sport I love and have dedicated my life to, I can say hand on heart that I have never experienced or witnessed any athlete in my camp fail an anti doping test, voluntary or mandatory and I stand by that fact.

“Today leaves me truly devastated as we call a postponement to such an amazing event that I was honoured to say I was a part of.

“I have worked closely with Conor Benn for the last seven years, developing and mentoring him as a fighter in the ring and a man outside of it.

“In particular we have completed this recent 12 week camp alongside Nigel, his father who has lived with Conor day to day, beginning to end.
