Chelsea 'take big step over rivals' for £52.5m star at Stamford Bridge

Chelsea have ‘taken the biggest steps’ to sign RB Leipzig forward Christopher Nkunku ahead of his other potential suitors, according to journalist Simon Phillips.

The 24-year-old is one of the most in-demand stars in the European games at this moment in time, and it seems as though the Blues are in pole position to secure his signature.

Last week, it was revealed by German outlet BILD that Nkunku had undergone a medical with Chelsea over the summer ahead of a potential move following the conclusion of the current campaign.

And David Ornstein of The Athletic has now provided an update on the France international’s situation, claiming that he has signed a pre-contract agreement with the west Londoners.

Ornstein states that Chelsea have committed to paying Leipzig a price in excess of Nkunku’s €60 million (£52.5m) release clause in an attempt to fend off the competition for his services.

The deal is not yet officially finalised for the immensely talented star to join Graham Potter’s charges, but it seems to be at an advanced stage at this moment in time.

Following the news that Nkunku has already completed a medical, Phillips checked in with his sources who backed up those claims.

He told GiveMeSport: “So, when that came out this morning, I obviously checked in with Chelsea sources.

“And to add to the interest that’s been there for next summer, they’ve told me that Chelsea have taken the biggest steps ahead of any other interested clubs at the moment to secure Nkunku for next summer.

“Other bits that have been reported today, it’s all correct. I had it all confirmed this morning.”
