Chelsea make offer to sign Jadon Sancho from Manchester United

Chelsea have made a formal bid to sign Jadon Sancho from Manchester United ahead of tonight's transfer deadline.

United held discussions with Chelsea about Sancho on Tuesday amid the possibility of a swap deal involving Raheem Sterling but that is unlikely to materialise.

Sources say discussions are ongoing over a loan deal with an obligation to buy. United have deliberately avoided temporary transfers this summer and an initial loan could see Sancho's salary covered in full by Chelsea.

Chelsea have maintained their interest in Sancho, who United are keen to offload despite his reintegration into the first team squad. A loan deal is the likeliest deal-breaker as United want close to £30m to sell Sancho.

Sancho has been omitted from both of United's Premier League matchday squads so far this season. He still travelled with the squad for the 2-1 defeat to Brighton on Saturday.

The former Borussia Dortmund player's only appearance for United in the past year was as a substitute against Manchester City in the Community Shield earlier this month.

Sancho was banished from the United squad last September after he publicly accused manager Erik ten Hag of lying over his omission from the squad for the 3-1 defeat at Arsenal. Borussia Dortmund re-signed Sancho on loan from United in January for a loan fee rising to £6.4million and he started in their Champions League final defeat to Real Madrid.
