Chelsea: Azpilicueta's brilliant mind games before Havertz's winner v Palmeiras
Chelsea have been crowned champions of the world after defeating Palmeiras in the Club World Cup final.
It looked as if the game would be decided by penalties with the scores locked at 1-1 deep into extra-time.
But Chelsea were given a 117th minute spot-kick when Cesar Azpilicueta’s effort struck a Palmeiras player in the hand.
Kai Havertz ended up taking the penalty and he showed nerves of steel to send Weverton the wrong way.
The German was the coolest man in the stadium. But he may not have been if it weren’t for the actions of Chelsea’s captain, Azpilicueta.
Azpilicueta won the penalty and then took the ball himself.
He stood by the penalty spot and made Palmeiras’ players, as well as the majority of people watching at home, think he was taking the spot-kick.
The Spaniard stood there for a few minutes while Palmeiras players protested to the referee and tried to get in his head.
When all the drama died down and the Palmeiras players went to the edge of the box, Azpilicueta turned around and gave the ball to Havertz.
The German, who wasn’t exposed to any of Palmeiras’ distraction techniques, then slotted the ball into the corner with elegance.
