Chelsea 2-1 West Ham: Edouard Mendy got away with mistake thanks to VAR

Edouard Mendy really got away with one in Chelsea’s Premier League clash with West Ham.

David Moyes’ West Ham team travelled to Stamford Bridge in the sixth round of 2022/2023 Premier League.

The visitors seized the initiative in the game, putting in an impressive display and going 1-0 up in the 62nd minute courtesy of a Michail Antonio goal.

But Chelsea fought back, with left-back Ben Chilwell equalising after coming off the bench for the Blues before setting up Kai Havertz for the second.

The home side looked to be cruising to a comfortable 2-1 victory, however in the 89th minute, a moment of madness from Mendy nearly cost them the three points.

A stray ball made its way into the penalty area and was chased by West Ham’s Jarod Bowen.

In truth, Bowen was never going to get there but his presence seemingly panicked Mendy, who couldn’t decide whether to rush out to claim the ball or retreat to his goal line.

In the end, Mendy ended up doing both, charging out whilst consistently stopping, almost doing a bizarre dance on the pitch.

He flung himself at the ball, knocking it into the path of Maxwell Cornet who duly converted to make it 2-2.

The goal, though, was ruled out by the referee and West Ham fans have been uproar on social media trying to work out why.
