Chef Gary Usher hits back after 'beggar in the street' abuse

Award-winning chef Gary Usher has defended himself following vile abuse on social media after he announced his latest Crowdfunder appeal. Gary is the owner of the Elite Bistros group of restaurants across the north west, which includes Kala in Manchester and Hispi in Didsbury.

The chef announced earlier this month that he is planning a new Crowdfund appeal to help with the "long overdue" refurbishment of his original restaurant, Sticky Walnut, in Chester. The appeal will launch on March 4 and mean backers get a meal voucher to spend at one of the Elite Bistros restaurants in return for backing the Crowdfund.

The group has had huge success with previous Crowdfund and Kickstarter appeals, most recently raising a massive £200,000 to help with the refurbishment of The White Horse pub in Churton. It has already been named in a list of the Top 50 Gastropubs in the UK less than a year after opening.

But since announcing his latest fundraising initiative, the chef has faced some abuse on social media from critics unhappy with the Crowdfund idea.

Although when one person decided to call Gary "worse than a beggar in the street" on X, formerly known as Twitter, the chef wasn't going to take it lying down.

The commenter, called RussC2023 on X, wrote in response to the Crowdfunder idea: "Shameless. Not content with the public buying u an empire, u now want them to refurb it for you.

"You're worse than a beggar in the street, at least they are genuinely in need. You've made enough off ppls goodwill already. If you're still struggling ur clearly not a gd businessman."
