Cheapest petrol and diesel stations in Greater Manchester as Asda and Sainsbury's offer lowest fuel price

Brits looking to fill their tanks with cheap petrol or diesel at the moment may struggle to find a good deal as prices at the pumps remain stubbornly high.

Experts warned earlier this month that drivers are likely to face inflated fuel costs over the coming weeks, partly down to oil producer group OPEC+ restricting global supply. The RAC also said the recent fall in the wholesale price of fuel "isn’t being fairly reflected on the forecourt" with data showing that petrol is being overpriced by around 7p a litre.

Last week, new figures showed that inflation held steady in September as the benefit of easing food inflation was offset by higher petrol and diesel prices. The ONS said fuel prices were still almost 10 per cent lower than this time last year, but had jumped 3.6 per cent against levels from August.

While drivers are facing higher than usual prices, shopping around for fuel could save you a lot of money as costs vary between different retailers and forecourts.

Fuel retailers have been told they will soon have to publish up-to-date petrol and diesel prices online for customers to see. A voluntary scheme is currently in place before new rules are brought in, and companies including Shell, BP, Esso and supermarket retailers Morrisons, Sainsbury’s, Tesco and Asda have all signed up. It means data for at least 4,000 forecourts in the UK is currently available.
