Charlton Athletic receive Nick Pope cash boost after goalkeeper's Newcastle United move

Charlton Athletic owner Thomas Sangaard has revealed they recouped a fraction of Nick Pope’s transfer fee from Newcastle United. Burnley agreed a deal with the Magpies - believed to be around £10million - to offload the England international last month.

The figure is judged to be a discounted price considering the 30-year-old had a stellar campaign at Turf Moor in 2021-22. Relegation forced Burnley’s hand somewhat as Pope is eyeing a place in Gareth Southgate’s World Cup squad.

Now, it has been confirmed the recently-relegated side have received even less as Charlton claimed a tidy rebate. Pope left the Valley in 2016 to join the Clarets following a string of loan spells.

The shot-stopper joined the Addicks as a 19-year-old but struggled to cement a first-team place - despite competing in the Championship. Sandgaard announced Charlton recouped “a lot of money” out of the Pope deal - due to inserting a sell-on clause in his contract - while speaking to the South London Press.

“We got a lot of money out of that one,” he said. “I’m very pleased with that. Clubs like us, who develop a lot of our academy players, will naturally in some years have a good income from that sort of sell on.

“Especially since the players are not always fully developed when we sell them and it is a limited amount we get – when they fully develop at a Premier League club then you can see how much they can be worth.

“It’s nice the system gives us the opportunity to make something out of it at that stage.”
