Charles Leclerc reflects on Ferrari mistakes as he loses Monaco GP victory

Ferrari driver Charles Leclerc has reflected on the mistakes that cost him victory at the Monaco Grand Prix.

The Monegasque was having a fine weekend at his home race with him taking pole position and leading the early stages, before pit strategy came into play and left him dropping down to P4.

Indeed, it was a real shame for him as he looked as though he was going to finally achieve a positive result in front of his home fans, only for it to unravel and for Sergio Perez to take the glory.

Speaking post-race, then, Leclerc bemoaned the mistakes that his team made:

“Sometimes mistakes can happen but there has been too many mistakes today overall,” said Leclerc.

“Obviously in those conditions, you rely a little bit on what the team can see because you don’t see what the others are doing with intermediates, with dry tyres.

“I have been asked questions about whether I wanted to go from the intermediates to the slicks and I said yes but not now, it will be a bit later on in the race.

“But I don’t understand what made us change our mind and go on these intermediates, I got undercut and then got stuck behind Carlos.

“There has been a lot of mistakes and we can’t afford to do that.”

Leclerc now sits in 2nd place in the Drivers’ standings, nine points off of Max Verstappen who leads and who finished ahead of him in P3.

Sergio Perez, meanwhile, is now just six points off of Leclerc after the Mexican took victory on Sunday afternoon.
