Championship wrap: Marcus Harness double denies Wayne Rooney, Alan Browne on target for Preston

Wayne Rooney was denied his first win as Birmingham manager after high-flying Ipswich recovered from two goals down to rescue a 2-2 draw at St. Andrew's.

Jay Stansfield’s fifth goal of the season gave City a 13th-minute lead and a Cameron Burgess own goal six minutes after the interval put the home side in control.

However, substitute Marcus Harness, who has yet to receive a Republic of Ireland call up despite declaring back in 2019, grabbed a late brace to salvage a draw to bring Ipswich within four points of league leaders Leicester.

Former Ireland under-21 Finn Azaz grabbed a goal and an assist as Plymouth Argyle drew 3-3 with Middlesbrough at Home Park.

Goals from Bali Mumba, Azaz and Morgan Whittaker cancelled out efforts from Boro striker Josh Coburn (2) and Sam Greenwood.

Haji Wright put the Sky Blues ahead before Duane Holmes swiftly equalised, and Preston skipper Browne put the hosts ahead from the penalty spot before half-time.

Milutin Osmajic headed North End’s third after the break, before Wright grabbed his and Coventry’s second before full-time.

Fourth-placed Southampton kept pace with the top of the table after Ryan Fraser’s stoppage-time goal extended Saints’ unbeaten run to seven matches as they defeated a spirited Millwall 1-0 at The Den.

West Brom sealed a third consecutive Sky Bet Championship victory with a 3-1 win over Hull to stay fifth in the table.

Jed Wallace, Matt Phillips and Semi Ajayi sealed the victory for West Brom, with the visitors’ equaliser coming from just the third goal in Lewie Coyle’s career.

Curtis Fleming’s first match as interim Bristol City boss ended in a 1-0 victory over
