Championship play-off finalists Coventry release Sean Maguire

Republic of Ireland international Sean Maguire has been released by Coventry City just three days after the Sky Blues' Premier League dream ended with penalty heartache in the Championship play-off final.

Maguire was not part of the squad that lost out to Luton Town, and is one of a number of players released by the club.

The 29-year-old joined from Preston in January on an initial deal until the end of the season saying he needed a "fresh start" after half a dozen years at Deepdale.

He made seven appearances as Coventry entered the play-off picture.

Maguire, who won the last of his 12 international caps against Bulgaria in November 2020, joined the club on the same day as former St Patrick’s Athletic defender Luke McNally signed on loan from Burnley, and the latter is returning to the Clarets.

The 23-year-old played four games for Burnley, who ended the season as Championship winners, before the loan switch and was a vital part of the Coventry team that went all the way to Wembley, racking up 22 appearances along the way.

Normally the right-sided defender in Coventry’s back three, McNally will be hoping to force his way into Stephen Kenny’s plans at international level, with a squad named on Thursday for the upcoming European Championships qualifiers away to Greece (16 June) and three days later at home to Gibraltar.
