Champions League: Fans joke Yaya Toure has lifted Pep Guardiola and Man City ‘curse’

Manchester City fans have joked that Yaya Toure may have lifted Pep Guardiola’s Champions League ‘curse’ while conducting Thursday’s draw.

Toure only made 17 appearances in all competitions during his final season with Man City and this eventually led to some eyebrow-raising comments from the player’s agent, Dimitri Seluk, in 2018.

“God sees everything. The way he acted with Yaya, a legend of the club, he turned Africa against himself — and many African fans turned away from City,” Seluk said at the time, per The Sun.

“I’m sure many African shamans in the future will not allow Guardiola to win the Champions League.

“This will be for Guardiola, an African curse. Life will show whether I am right or not.

“Nothing good can be said about the human qualities of Pep Guardiola.

“The fact that Guardiola ended Yaya’s career in Manchester City is not a mistake but a crime.”

Four years later and Guardiola still hasn’t managed to win the Champions League with Man City.

In fact, it’s now 11 years since the revered Catalan coach last lifted the European Cup, back when he was manager of Barcelona.

City reached the 2020-21 final but, despite going into the game as favourites, suffered a 1-0 defeat against Chelsea.

And Guardiola’s side suffered more heartbreak last season when they were dumped out of the Champions League by Real Madrid, despite being minutes away from reaching their second successive final.

This led to fans speculating whether the ‘curse’ that Seluk mentioned in 2018 was legit.

Will Guardiola ever win the Champions League again?

However, City fans are feeling more positive after Toure wished City good luck during Thursday’s draw.
