Celtic U18 manager hunt sees Charlie Mulgrew and Jonny Hayes in the mix to secure Parkhead return

Jonny Hayes and Charlie Mulgrew are in the frame to be Celtic Under-18s boss.

Celts are on the lookout for a new coach after Stuart McLaren left at the turn of the year and the former Parkhead players are among the candidates. Hayes has been coaching in Aberdeen’s academy this season, assisting at Under-16 level, while continuing his playing career.

The 36-year-old hasn’t featured for the Pittodrie first team since home defeat to St Johnstone at the end of February. Mulgrew, 38, is keen on a coaching role after hanging up his boots last September. The defender had two playing stints at Celts, most successfully in a six-year spell after returning to sign for Neil Lennon in 2010. Celtic B team head coach Darren O’Dea, who is the former Under-18 coach, recently formed part of a reshuffle at the club by moving into a new role of Professional Player Pathway Manager.
