Celtic set to discover Rangers replacement for Ange Postecoglou homecoming as new club to help make 'history'

Celtic will soon discover who they are taking on in November's Sydney Super Cup Down Under.

The tournament - which will take place while the Premiership side are on a break due to World Cup 2022 in Qatar - sparked controversy last season when it was announced Rangers would face their Glasgow rivals in a competition dubbed by some as Hoops boss Ange Postecoglou's homecoming. Under mounting fan pressure, the Light Blues pulled out, and now a new team must be found.

A first derby encounter on the other side of the world was set to take place at the Accor Stadium in front of 83,500 supporters, with A-League duo Sydney FC and Western Sydney Wanderers also partaking in this event. Organisers have been quiet in the aftermath of Rangers' departure from proceedings but have now made a statement to confirm plans are well underway to find a new club.

A message on the homepage of the Sydney Super Cup reads: "History will be made in Sydney this November in the newly created Sydney Super Cup. Updated details to be announced soon!"

Postecoglou - former manager of Brisbane Roar, Melbourne Victory and the Australian national team - will take Celtic to face Sydney FC in the first match.

Then they take on Rangers' replacement soon after. They are likely to be without the likes of Josip Juranovic, Kyogo Furuhashi and Cameron Carter-Vickers if they are involved at the World Cup.
