Celtic hero certain Ange Postecoglou wants Champions League crack more than EPL promised land

Jackie McNamara is convinced Ange Postecoglou has snubbed several top jobs in England because his heart is set on cracking the Champions League with Celtic.

The Hoops boss has been linked with numerous gigs down south in the last year – with 12 EPL managers bagged this season. Postecoglou’s name has been chucked in to the mix with the Leicester City job following the departure of former Celtic gaffer Brendan Rodgers.

But the Aussie has also been touted for positions at the likes of Everton, Brighton, Southampton, Crystal Palace and Spurs. Record Sport revealed this week Postecoglou wasn’t interested in jumping ship for the relegation threatened Foxes at this business end of the campaign but the attention on the former Socceroos leader is expected to remain. McNamara is certain there has been strong interest from at least some of them – but he believes the Celts boss will stick around for the big stage next season.

Postecoglou got more plaudits than points in the Champions League this year but can take a massive step towards an automatic group stage return next term with three points against Rangers on Saturday. The Hoops could open up a 12 point Premiership lead over their fierce foes with just seven games to go – and tee up another title at the continent’s biggest competition.

McNamara said: “I think Ange will want to be better in Europe. He’ll want to go into the Champions League and make an impact and do well on that stage. I thought they were excellent in some of the games this year for 60 minutes. When you get chances at that level you need to take them. He’s been linked with a lot of jobs but he will be.
