Celtic could now revisit "successful market" to sign "very strong" £2.5m star - journalist

Celtic may be ‘hoping’ to have ‘more success’ in the French market as they continue to pursue a deal for Alexandre Mendy, according to journalist Pete O’Rourke.

The Hoops have been heavily linked with a move for the SM Caen striker recently as manager Ange Postecoglou looks to make further additions to his first-team squad.

According to French outlet L’Equipe (via the Daily Record), an initial offer of €3 million (£2.5m) has reportedly been put on the table by the Celtic hierarchy for Mendy, who has been described as “very strong”.

The report states that several sides are keeping close tabs on the 28-year-old’s situation, though, after impressing throughout the current campaign.

It’s claimed that Celtic’s opening bid has been turned down, but that Caen would be willing to negotiate a sale “in the event of a higher offer”, providing hope that an agreement can be reached.

And the level of interest in Mendy is understandable as he has registered 16 goals and one assist in 32 Ligue 2 appearances so far this season.

The 6 foot 2 ace’s goals have been unable to fire Caen into the play-off places, and as a result, he now appears destined to seek a new challenge over the summer months.

In recent years, Celtic have had success with the French market, bringing in Odsonne Edouard and Christopher Jullien from Paris Saint-Germain and Toulouse, respectively.

And O’Rourke believes the newly crowned Scottish Premiership champions may try their luck once again for the ‘talented’ Mendy.
