Celtic call Rangers 'the opposition' again for women's derby as opener gets social media cold shoulder

Celtic have refused to name Rangers during the women's Glasgow Derby with the "opposition" tag returning on Twitter for the opening goal.

The club's social media accounts sparked controversy when they refused to acknowledge their rivals in the April derby at Ibrox, instead tweeting "goal to the opposition" when Aaron Ramsey opened the scoring.

That led to teenager Alex Lowry poking fun after he scored in the Lowland League derby between the men's B-teams, celebrating his "opposition goal."

Celtic appeared to U-turn on their stance tweeting "goal to Rangers" during the 17 April Scottish Cup defeat.

The women's teams faced off in the final SWPL derby of the season and Malky Thomson's Gers rampaged into a 3-0 lead within half an hour.

And after the opening goal the Celtic Women twitter account brought the "opposition" tag out of cold storage.

There was no mention of Rangers as the second goal went in either but the third was met with a tweet reading: "Rangers make it 3."

A double for returning Jane Ross and a strike from Demi Vance saw Gers go into half-time at Petershill Park in convincing form.

And striker Kirsty Howat, who sat out the derby, was quick to respond with a correction of her own to Celtic's tweet.

"Goal to the champions," she said.

Rangers stormed to the SWPL title ending Glasgow City's stranglehold after a 0-0 draw with the longstanding champions last week.

Celtic are marooned in third place, some 14 points off top spot but 18 ahead of third-placed Hibs.
