CCTV appeal after robber with handgun threatens Post Office staff for cash

A robber with a handgun forced Post Office staff into a back office then escaped on a bicycle with cash and foreign currency, police have revealed.

Detectives in Bury have released CCTV images of a man in a high-vis jacket they want to speak with and issued an appeal for the public's help.

Greater Manchester Police said a man reportedly carrying a small black handgun walked into the Post Office on Sandy Lane in Prestwich, Bury, at around 10am on Wednesday.

Police said he forced workers into a back office area before demanding cash and currency. The robber rode away on a bicycle down Agecroft Road West towards Kersal, GMP added.

No one was injured and police now want to hear from anyone who recognises the man in the CCTV images.

In a Facebook post, GMP Bury South said: "Yesterday (Wednesday 19 April 2023), a man entered the Post Office on Sandy Lane, Prestwich around 10am, reportedly in possession of a small black handgun.

"It is believed he forced the staff into the back-office area and made demands for cash and foreign currency. Once it was handed over, he then rode off on a pedal bike down Agecroft Road West towards the Kersal area. Although shaken, staff members were not physically harmed.

"Initial enquiries established that the man arrived and left the scene on a push bike and had been captured on camera travelling the full length of Agecroft Road West before and after the offence.

"GMP are now asking for anyone to come forward who may have seen this man, especially those driving in the same area and who may have dashcam footage of the man on the bike.
