CCTV appeal after man burst into bank and 'pointed item in bag' at terrified staff

Police have issued a CCTV appeal after a man burst into a bank in Leigh and 'pointed an item in a bag' at terrified staff as he threatened them for cash.

The incident happened at the Lloyds Bank on Ellesmere Street on Wednesday, June 28, police said. The man burst into the bank at around 3.50pm.

He was carrying a white carrier bag with an 'unknown item' inside. He the pointed the bag towards staff and demanded they opened the till.

He stole a' small amount of cash' and fled the scene. The staff members were thankfully uninjured, but were left shaken up after the incident.

Police are now appealing for any witnesses to come forward. The suspect is believed to have turned right out of the bank, running towards Leigh bus station.

He is then believed to have gone through the station onto King Street, before running down an alley and then from Cook Street up Youd Street, officers said.

The man is described as being white with a tanned complexion. He was around 6ft tall and of stocky build.

He was wearing a dark, grey tracksuit with the hood up and a black baseball cap underneath. He had a dark face covering pulled up over his nose.

Detective Sergeant Andy Partington, of GMP’s Criminal Investigations Department, said: “Staff were very shaken up at this. Thankfully, no-one suffered any injuries but the fear they faced by not knowing what was inside the bag has caused a lot of anxiety and stress.
