Castleford Tigers make move for Warrington Wolves' Gareth Widdop

Castleford Tigers are in talks with Gareth Widdop over a potential move to the club next season. Rugby League Live understands discussions have taken place between the club and the England international, who is off-contract at Warrington at the end of the season.

Widdop is set to leave the Halliwell Jones Stadium at the end of the season. The Wolves are on the verge of signing Matt Dufty from Canterbury and with Stefan Ratchford set to sign a new deal, it means Widdop's time at the club is set to come to an end.

He is believed to be keen on continuing his career in the UK but nearer to his native Yorkshire home. That has seen him hold talks with Cas about a potential move for 2023.

The Tigers are expected to secure a deal for Wakefield Trinity halfback Jacob Miller ahead of next season, which will see him replace Hull FC-bound Jake Trueman. However, Danny Richardson is also off-contract and Widdop could yet prove to be a replacement for the former St Helens halfback, who is just returning from a serious neck injury.

Widdop has spent three years with the Wolves in a career that saw him start with a decade in the NRL with Melbourne Storm and St George Illawarra Dragons.

Capped 29 times by England and three times by Great Britain, he made 196 NRL appearances and has played 38 times in Super League, scoring 16 tries for the Wire in the process.

The Tigers are looking to get their business done early. Alongside Miller they are understood to have signed Jack Broadbent and Alex Mellor from Leeds Rhinos.
