Carnage as BMW ploughs into back of Transit van on quiet residential street

Shock images capture the aftermath of a serious car smash.

The managed wreckage of what is believed to be a BMW can be seen embedded in the side of a Transit van.

A Citroen further along was also shown with damage to the driver's side door and wing.

Emergency services raced to the scene in Middleton, Manchester, this morning.

The collision occurred on Windermere Road near to its junction with Derwent Road on the Langley estate.

Fire crews were forced to use specialist cutting equipment to make the vehicles and the area safe.

Witnesses at the scene said four youngsters were seen to run from the BMW following the collision, but this has not been confirmed.

They said a man who was in the Citroen is understood to have suffered only minor injuries.

Nothing has been confirmed as yet by police.

There have been no further reports of any injuries.

Firefighters and paramedics were called to the scene together with police at around 11am on Sunday (February 13).

Fire crews remained at the scene for an hour.

The images showed debris scattered across the road from the collision.

Greater Manchester Police have been contacted for comment.

A spokesperson for Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service (GMFRS) said: "Just before 11am this morning (Sunday 13th February), two fire engines from Heywood and Blackley fire stations, along with the Technical Response Unit from Ashton, were called to reports of a road traffic collision involving three vehicles on Windermere Road, Middleton.

"Crews arrived quickly at the scene.

"Firefighters used specialist cutting equipment to make the vehicles and area safe.
