Carlton Palmer assesses immediate situation of 25-year-old following European transfer rumour

Signing a new contract that will expire in the summer of 2026, Alex Palmer appears to remain as a big part of West Brom’s future plans.

The 25-year-old will be keen to undergo a strong pre-season as he seeks more regular football with the Baggies next season.

With Sam Johnstone departing, Palmer and David Button are left as the most senior options within the Albion goalkeeping department, however, the Midlands club have been linked with a move for FC St Pauli shot-stopper Nikola Vasilj.

Looking into Palmer’s WBA future, in the context of the interest in Vasilj, Carlton Palmer told FLW: “So, this is nothing to do with Alex (Palmer).

“They’ve signed him on a new long-term contract which shows what they feel about him as a goalkeeper and about the future.

“But this is about what they need to do in the here and now.”

The verdict

Four-year contracts are not just handed out, with Palmer’s deal until 2022 showing that he is still a major part of their future plans.

The 25-year-old will currently be battling out with Button, but should they secure the signing of the Bosnian goalkeeper, then it will be interesting to see what immediately happens, as that would be a very competitive area of the pitch for Albion.

Briefly showing that he can adapt to Championship football during an emergency loan spell with Luton Town last season, that taste of first-team football will give him the motivation to try and win the number one spot during the upcoming campaign.

Still just 25 years of age, Palmer has time on his side when it comes to his WBA career, however, he will be eager to break into the starting XI.
