Carlos Corberan sends heartfelt condolences to loved ones of Huddersfield Town fan Daryl Hopson

Carlos Corberan has sent a personal message of condolence to the family and friends of Daryl Hopson, the popular Huddersfield Town fan who died on Thursday afternoon.

Terriers head coach Corberan took a moment before answering the first question at his Friday morning press conference to say: “Before I start to give you the answer to this [first question], I want to send all our condolences to Daryl Hopson’s family and friends because yesterday he passed away and it was sad news for us.”

The club had been actively involved with sending messages of support to Hopson throughout the season, with players sending their thoughts on social media and in the form of a banner at a game in September; fans joining a minute’s applause during the 31st minute of Friday’s home game against Barnsley; and Corberan unveiling a shirt reading “Always with you Daz” in front of the John Smith’s Stadium crowd live on TV after that game.

Corberan feels those two-way shows of connection between the club and supporters are hugely important, saying: “I think this is one of the things that makes Huddersfield a very special club, because everyone from the club suffers whenever any of our fans is having a complicated moment. It’s a real and honest feeling because for us they are the most important people we have and we work just for them.

“We know that when someone was fighting for his life and was suffering, we suffered with him. The only way we had to make something was to perform and to make him feel how important everyone is for us. For me the gesture of every Huddersfield fan in the 31st minute of the previous game, and the gesture of the club in that minute, was special.
