Carlos Carvalhal reacts to Barry Bannan's brilliant Sheffield Wednesday milestone

Barry Bannan made his 300th appearance for Sheffield Wednesday on Saturday as the Owls strengthened their promotion credentials with a 4-1 victory over Cheltenham Town. The Scotsman has really cemented his status as one of the club’s greats in the last few seasons and has shown his quality on so many occasions this term.

While he would have wanted to mark such a milestone with a goal, the Wednesday captain’s usual brilliance wasn’t required as much as it has been on a number of occasions this season. Goals from Massimo Luongo, Lee Gregory, Jack Hunt and George Byers were more than enough to secure yet another home win.

Without Bannan, Darren Moore’s side certainly would not be in promotion contention such is his importance in the side. There haven’t been many, if any, better players than the pint-sized midfielder in League One this season and Wednesday supporters know just how lucky they are to have him in the team.

He is now coming towards the end of his seventh campaign at Hillsborough and, despite being the stand-out performer this term, it still doesn’t quite live up to the time he spent working under Carlos Carvalhal. In the Portuguese manager’s first two years in charge, the Owls secured consecutive finishes in the Championship play-offs but unfortunately were unable to get the job done on both occasions.

The former Wednesday boss took to Twitter on Saturday to pay tribute to Bannan’s milestone in a classy message to the man he used to manage.
