Cardiff Rugby set for administration as WRU on brink of shock takeover - live updates

The Welsh Rugby Union are on the verge of completing an emergency takeover of Cardiff with the club set to go into administration.

Cardiff's players were offered reassurances over their future after an emergency meeting was held on Tuesday afternoon at the Arms Park, with the club set to serve a notice of intent (NOI) to appoint an administrator.

The WRU can not step in straightway officially but are set to support Cardiff by initially taking over the day-to-day running of the organisation as the administration process begins.

Many of the players and staff have remained in the dark on the club's fate in recent days - with some even turning to external sources to question what was going on at the start of this week as the rumour mill went into overdrive.

After an initial training session scheduled for Tuesday was cancelled on Monday evening, an emergency meeting was called for Tuesday afternoon.

While the WRU have stepped in to save Cardiff, the Welsh club's long-term future remains uncertain.

A Cardiff Athletic Club board meeting was held on Monday night where it was revealed a WRU takeover was in the pipeline.

The WRU will have to decide whether to dispense with the majority of the old Cardiff board of directors and appoint a new one. The reality is not much will change on the field because Cardiff will have the same players and the same coaching team but it remains to be seen what the future holds for Wales' capital city club.

Questions will also be asked of the due diligence involved in Helford Capital's takeover in January 2024. Fit and proper person and financial tests on the directors of Helford
