Cardiff kept their lengthy winning run over the Dragons in the league going, with a 31-23 bonus point victory at the Arms Park extending the streak to 19 matches.
Tries from Alex Mann, Harri Millard, Callum Sheedy and Rey Lee-Lo set the stage for what looked like a comfortable victory, only for the Dragons to show some late resolve with scores through Morgan Lloyd and Aki Seiuli.
Regardless of how it finished, Cardiff can take pleasure in a derby victory that moves them up into the top half of the United Rugby Championship table.
