Cardiff Half Marathon live updates as record numbers take to the streets of the capital

The 22nd Cardiff Half Marathon is taking place in the Welsh capital on Sunday, with tens of thousands of runners expected to participate.

With several road closures planned across the city, residents and visitors are being advised to plan their journeys accordingly.

The event, which is Wales’ largest mass participation event and one of Europe’s largest half marathons, has over 27,500 runners registered this year. The race is a highlight of the Cardiff calendar, with an electric atmosphere as participants pass by the city’s iconic landmarks as spectators cheer them on from the sidelines.

Some road closures have been in effect since Wednesday, and some will remain in place until just before midnight on Monday.

The weather is expected to be kinder on Sunday than it has been on Friday and Saturday, as the worst of Storm Amy moves clear of Wales. Saturday’s Cardiff Half junior races were cancelled due to adverse weather, with organisers saying: “The safety of our runners, spectators, volunteers and staff is always our top priority.”

Every spot in this year’s main race filled up in a record-breaking 12 hours, and due to “unprecedented growth in demand” organisers have announced they will replace the current first-come, first-served entry process with a ballot system for the 2026 half marathon.
