Cardiff City 4-3 Leyton Orient: Robinson scores twice as Bluebirds edge incredible seven-goal thriller

Cardiff City produced a stunning comeback to come out on the right side of a seven-goal thriller against Leyton Orient.

In a breathless contest that swung one way and then the other, Brian Barry-Murphy’s side twice threw away a lead before showing real attacking quality, and no shortage of resilience, to finally edge past the visitors.

It was far from straightforward, with Nathan Trott producing several crucial saves and Orient punishing defensive errors, but City ultimately found a way to claim three points that will feel hugely significant for their season.

Barry-Murphy’s men struggled to find rhythm early on, with Orient carving out the better chances. Nathan Trott was forced into a fine save to deny Aaron Connolly after Dom Ballard had slipped him through, while Tyreeq Bakinson also tested the Bluebirds keeper from a corner.

Despite the pressure, it was Cardiff who struck first. Against the run of play, Callum Robinson justified his recall to the starting XI with a superb finish on 20 minutes.

Chris Willock hooked the ball into the striker’s path and, under pressure from two defenders, Robinson showed real composure to slot past Tommy Simkin for 1-0.

But the lead lasted less than 10 minutes. Gabriel Osho’s underhit backpass gifted Connolly the simplest of chances, with the Orient forward racing clear before rifling into the bottom corner to make it 1-1.
