Cardiff City 0-1 Luton Town: Harry Cornick's header enough to sink frustrated Bluebirds

Luton Town subjected Cardiff City to their third defeat in four matches as Harry Cornick's second-half goal was enough to earn the Hatters a 1-0 victory in the Welsh capital and strengthen their play-off credentials

In a game laden with chances for both teams, and good ones at that, it was just a matter of who would stick the ball in the back of the net first. City had their fair share of golden opportunities, Jordan Hugill and Isaak Davies were both wasteful with gilt-edged chances, but it was the Hatters who struck the first, and lethal, blow. It was probably one of their most difficult chances, too.

Cornick was found by a trademark Robert Snodgrass cross and the Luton forward looped a terrific header over Dillon Phillips and into the Cardiff net with 20 minutes to play.

It tightened Luton's grip on fourth place, while Cardiff, who have already guaranteed Championship football next term, have seen their charge up the ladder just grind to a halt in recent weeks.

The Bluebirds reverted back largely to the team which beat Reading, opting for a back four once again after transitioning to their usual three-at-the-back system against Hull City.

There were six changes in total from that defeat by the Tigers, however it didn't help with Cardiff's sluggish starts as the Hatters enjoyed some decent early chances, including a first-minute header from Dan Potts which was sent over the bar and a fizzed, low shot from Fred Onyedinma which whistled wide of the mark.

It took the best part of 15 minutes before Cardiff really put their stamp on proceedings but through Rubin Colwill the Bluebirds enjoyed a couple of decent opportunities of their own.
